Welcome to Year 5!
Teacher: Miss Booth
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Aylmer
Please see the attached topic web which has also been sent home.Year 5 Topic Overview (1) revised
Home Learning will be set every Wednesday and children should complete this in their red home learning books, unless stated otherwise. The children will have until the following Tuesday to complete their home learning. We also offer homework club on a Monday night. If your child has completed their homework prior to the club they will be given challenging tasks linked with the year group expectations around their topic.
Home Reading Books
The children will continue bringing reading books home every day. I ask that you could aim to read with your child every day, even if this is just a couple of pages. I am sure you have heard from your children about the reward system we have introduced for home reading – points make prizes!
If you do read with your child please record this in writing in their Home Reading Record. Children will also be bringing a library book home once our bus is finished and our library is set up!
Water Bottles and Fruit
PTFA provide children with school water bottles for use in classrooms. In addition, all children have access to water and milk at lunchtimes. You are welcome to send your child with a piece of fruit for playtime but please do not send sweets, chocolates or crisps.
As you know, Year 5 will have their PE sessions on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Children also take part in our whole school Friday finals and will need to wear PE kit every Friday. If children attend an after school sports club they may either come to school in their PE kit or wear their uniform and bring it with them to change at the end of the day. Children should have long hair tied up and jewellery removed. If children are unable to remove their own earrings please do this at home on PE days.
We have been really busy in Year 5 this term. In English, Art and Geography, we have been studying survival and have looked at tsunamis in Indonesia and the wildlife associated with that area, creating wonderful art and descriptive written pieces. In Science, we have studied Evolution and Inheritance, focusing on how animals have adapted to their surroundings and habitats. We have had an author in on ‘Library Bus’ day and an artist in to do figure sketching work linked to World War 2. These sketches were outstanding! We have also been studying Mary Anning linked to our Science and Biography unit in English and the children have used ‘Talk for Writing’ to retell her amazing story.
