Year 1 2023 - 2024

Mrs Vent

Our teacher in Year 1 is Mr Simpson and he is helped by Mrs Murphy.

It has been an exciting start to Year 1 and we are looking forward to teaching you this next year and hope you will enjoy your time in Year 1.

Some work will be challenging, but it’s lots of fun too!

Autumn 1: Percy the Park-Keeper

This half term we are looking at several stories by Nick Butterworth that will introduce us to the writing skills that are required in Year One. We will learn all about Percy’s Friend: The Barn Owl, The Squirrels, The Hedgehog and The Badger before finishing off with The Rescue Party.

In our geography lessons we will go on a tour round the United Kingdom and learn many of the characteristics that make up the countries and their capital cities.

Through our Art lessons we are developing self portraits by studying a range of different artists and the mediums they use including oil pastel, charcoal, watercolour, and even environmental portraits.

In Maths we will be looking at Place Value of numbers up to 10 and start to represent them in different ways. We will make the most of our Maths equipment and learn how it can be used to help us in our lessons. We will then look at comparing, sorting, and ordering numbers using terms like greater than and less than.

Finally in Science we are looking at the human body and learning about our different senses. We will learn about which body part is connected to each sense and study the scientist Linda Brown-Buck who learnt all about how we smell. We will also start our Seasons Topic by looking for signs of Autumn in our local environment.

Autumn 2: The Great Fire of London

This half term we are going back in time to study The Great Fire of London with the help of Vlad the flea and Boxton the rat. We will look at how and why the fire was significant and how our lives have changed since 1666. This will be the focus of our English lessons as well as Science and History. In our Art lessons we will also learn how to make pop up pictures inspired by the Tudor Houses.

In Maths we will be looking at addition and subtraction within 10 and develop our confidence in using the practical equipment we were introduced to in Autumn 1. We will also learn to use the PART-PART- WHOLE model and learn number bonds to help us with our mental calculations and understanding of number.

As we get ready for Christmas we will be preparing for our KS1 Nativity and in RE we will look at the big question: Why is Jesus special to Christians?
