Art

The Art curriculum at Whittlefield has been designed with the ultimate goal to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. It aims to provide the pupils with opportunities to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

Over the course of their time at Whittlefield, children enjoy developing their skills and knowledge in:

  • Sketching and painting

  • Sculpture

  • Collage

  • Textiles

Having a clear focus for each art lesson, contributes to the high standards of teaching and learning. The key areas of art are revisited throughout the key stages to develop and consolidate the pupils’ skills and knowledge in a range of art, craft and design techniques. By the end of Key Stage 2 all pupils are proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and other craft and design techniques.

In order to develop pupils’ appreciation of art, pupils discover and learn about great artists, architects and designers in history and develop their understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Through discussions, self and peer assessments, pupils develop their ability to describe the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines and make links to their own work.
